It was late when Trev and Charlotte wandered toward the apartment, hand in hand and with little left to say after the long and tiring day. Christmas decorations in gardens, trees twinkling behind windows, and street lights turned the town into a festive delight. They stopped on the corner of the roundabout to gaze at the gorgeous tree in its centre.
âHow wonderful.â Charlotte had the faintest smile on her lips and the changing colours of the lights wound through the branches reflected in her eyes. Trev wrapped his arms around her and she leaned back against his chest. âThis time last year, the roundabout was empty thanks to those awful thieves. And Jonas was insisting all the traders pitched in with money to buy a new tree. Nothingâs changed.â
Trev sensed her mood shift and leaned down to kiss her cheek. âA lot has changed. Most of it for the better, so stop stressing.â
âIâm not. Not really. It just grates on my nerves how one man has so much influence in town. But the tree is lovely.â
They crossed the road. The shops were all closed and there was little traffic around. Outside the fish and chip shop, Charlotte peered through the window.
âWhat are you doing? Jonas isnât in there.â
âMight just as well be. Look at their Giving Tree.â
âWhat about it?â Trev cupped his hands on either side of his eyes as he joined Charlotte. âLights are off but not everyone leaves them on at night.â
âNot that so much. Can you see any of our cards hanging on it? For that matter, where is all the signage for the promotion?â Charlotte stepped back to inspect the window and door. âIâm sure they had a poster up earlier.â
âDo you know if theyâd had donations?â
âYes. Ted mentioned the other day theyâd had lots of people buy gift cards for family meals. He was touched by the generosity.â
âOdd.â
âMore than odd. Iâll drop by and see if everythingâs okay tomorrow. Maybe the poster fell down or something.â Charlotte took Trevâs hand when he offered it again. âOr maybe thatâs why Koby was there.â
Better not be.
âHeâd have messaged me if he came across any criminal activity. Knowing his love of food, he was probably working his way through all the local eateries.â Trev would speak with him in the morning and see why he was talking with Jonas.
A few minutes later they reached the bottom of the apartment steps. âIâm fine from here.â Charlotte went up a couple of steps to kiss him more easily. He liked her thinking and kissed her back. Several times. And then a long, heartfelt cuddle.
âWill you text me once youâre home?â Charlotte finally asked.
âI will.â
She climbed the steps.
âHave you got your key?â he teased.
âSh. Yes.â She whispered. âDonât wake Zoe.â Charlotte blew him a kiss and let herself in.
Once he heard the door lock, he returned to the street. Everything was quiet. He found himself going in the direction of his motherâs house and shook his head. Home meant Lewisâ place. For now.
